Moira Shire Council

(Feb 2010) Working Effectively with Interpreters

Providing culturally responsive care to recent arrivals to the Moira Shire was the motivation for the Working Effectively with Interpreter training on Tuesday 9th February 2010.

Maternal and Child Health nurses and other staff from Shepparton, Cobram and surrounding towns attended the two-hour training at the Moira Shire Council Community Development Office in Cobram.

It was evident during lively discussions that the developing demographics in the region prompted a call to All Graduates, as language services provider to the Office of Children and Early Childhood Development in Victoria.

Maria Maggio De Leo, All Graduates’ HR Manager - Contractors and Stephanie Mayne, Communications Manager discussed:

•         Knowing why it is important to use qualified, accredited interpreters

•         The role and limitations of interpreters and users of interpreters

•         Identifying the signs of good and of poor interpreting

•         Identifying the effect of cultural differences on the interpreting process

•         How best to work with interpreters on site

•         How best to work with interpreters via video conference equipment

•         How best to work with interpreters over the phone

•         The risks of using non-accredited interpreters

•         Department guidelines and booking requirements for agencies requesting interpreters

•         The All Graduates’ Online Booking System – how to use it
